Park University

As part of new curriculum this fall, history students at Park University are putting together an exhibit that will go on display in December at a local museum.

The history program at Park University now includes concentrations in applied history with new media, European/classical and U.S. history.

"The excitement of this 'renaissance' has been overwhelming," said Tim Westcott, Ph.D., associate professor of history and chair of the Department of Social Sciences at Park University. "A significant component of the new fall curriculum is for students to apply classroom theory and learning to actual historical professional endeavors."

"HIU220: History of the American West" is one of the courses applying critical thinking to the profession. Students in the class taught by Mary Joni Reist, adjunct instructor of history, are expected to create an exhibit at a local historical society or museum.

An open house and public viewing of the students' exhibit will be on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Harris-Kearney House, 4000 Baltimore in Kansas City, Mo. The exhibit is sponsored by the Harris-Kearney House, the Westport Historical Society and the John Wornall House Museum. A reception will accompany a tour of the free exhibit and interaction with the students and faculty.
