Competing against 146 other entrants representing 34 countries, Park University graduate student Tatiana Larionova will audition for the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition on Feb. 19-22 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
Originally from Russia, Larionova came to the United States to study under Stanislav Ioudenitch, the 2001 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist and Park University's associate professor of music. She is one of 270 pianists worldwide to apply for consideration.
Larionova, along with 52 other women and 94 men, was selected in December 2004 to audition. The selection is based on a set of rigorous criteria requiring prospective competitors to submit proof that they had performed several recent recital and orchestral appearances along with lists of works in their active repertoire, concert reviews, letters of recommendation from internationally established teachers and musicians, and other materials.
From January through February, the 147 pianists will be reviewed during a 40-minute solo recital, consisting of a repertoire of his/her choice. Following the screenings, the 30 applicants will be selected to participate at the Twelfth Cliburn Competition, where they will compete to become one of the six finalists who share hundreds of concert engagements throughout the United States and Europe in addition to cash prizes, recordings and other awards.
The 30 pianists selected to participate in the 2005 competition will be announced on Mar. 1. The Twelfth Van Cliburn Competition will take place in May and June in Fort Worth, Texas.
