Paul Mintner, Democracy Day essay contest grand prize winner, receives his award from Michael Droge, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs

To celebrate Constitution Day, Park University, along with Presidents Park in Williamsburg, Va., sponsored an essay contest for all high school seniors in the Greater Kansas City area.

The grand prize winner is Paul Mintner (pictured right) from Lafayette County C-1 High School in Higginsville, Mo. The first place winners from the Greater Kansas City area are Chloé Abel from Southwest Charter School; Carl Werner from Park Hill South High School, and Laura Eisenbeis, Steven McKee and Loren Roberts from Park Hill High School.

The selected topic, "The Constitution as a Living Document," asked high school seniors to consider ways the Constitution is important to Americans, as well as to the world as democracy is fast becoming the most commonly embraced form of government. Essay judges included scholars and public officials.

The grand prize winner of the contest receives a $2,000 Park University scholarship or a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university of his/her choice. The five Kansas City-area first place winners each received $100 prize. The winners' essays are posted on the Park University web site at www.park.edu/democracyday/essaywinners.aspx.
