Brackett essay published for Woolf conference journal

A critical essay written by Virginia Brackett, Ph.D., associate professor of English and director of the Honors Program, has been published. The essay, "The Artist/Intellectual as Politician," was recently published in Woolf Editing/Editing Woolf: Selected Papers from the Eighteenth Annual Conference on Virginia Woolf. Brackett previously presented an early draft of the essay at the conference in Denver in June 2008.

The essay examines a lack of self-confidence and resulting artistic insecurity on Woolf's part that caused her to produce failed projects, such as her biography of post-Impressionist artist and fellow Bloomsbury member Roger Fry. However, writing without an editor and unfettered by public input or opinion, she regained her successful approach to produce a "new biography" in her private correspondence.

Dr. Marthann Schulte

Schulte profiled in recent ACHE newsletter

Marthann Schulte, Ph.D., associate professor of education and coordinator of Online faculty evaluation, was featured in the April/May issue of the Association for Continuing Higher Education's 5 Minutes with ACHE newsletter. Schulte, who is active in the organization at both the regional and national levels, was featured in the "Professional Educator Profile" section of the newsletter. The profile included information about Schulte's education background, attitude about Online learning and personal connections to military education. M.P.A. grad wins Kansas City ASPA Fisher award

The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration hosted its 2009 awards banquet on May 20. Merideth Parrish, M.P.A. '08, (right, in adjacent photo, with Rebekkah Stuteville, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of Park's M.P.A. program) won the Stanley Fisher Memorial Award. Parrish currently serves as the public information officer for the City of Blue Springs, Mo.

The Fisher Award is given annually to outstanding graduate and undergraduate students in public administration attending academic institutions in the Kansas City area. Award winners show an interest in public administration beyond their classroom work, have performed exceptionally well in public administration courses and have applied insights of public administration to their campus activities.

ASPA Vice President Erik Bergrud, director of Park's International Center for Civic Engagement and special assistant to the president for University projects on civic engagement, served as the banquet's master of ceremonies and brought to life many memories and unforgettable stories about the almost 50-year history of the Kansas City Chapter. The event also included the presentation of the Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Student Essay Award, won by Daniel Brazil, a student at Sumner Academy High School in Kansas City, Kan.

Robert Mayer

Mayer moderates panel presentation for commercial brokers

Robert Mayer, School of Business executive-in-residence, moderated and co-presented a panel session on May 20 to the Commercial Brokers Association of Kansas City. Mayer and the rest of the panel spoke on "The Current Challenges and Issues for Banks." The focus of the discussion was on the current business and lending conditions that Kansas City area banks are facing, the federal regulations banks are facing and future market conditions for commercial real estate lending.

Dr. Sherry Fontaine

Fontaine elected to Accessible Arts organization board

Sherry Fontaine, Ph.D., director of the Master of Healthcare Leadership program and associate professor of healthcare leadership, was recently elected to the Accessible Arts board of directors. Accessible Arts is an organization dedicated to providing access to the arts for children with disabilities and those who care for them in social service programs, schools, mental health facilities, juvenile detention centers and community programs throughout the Kansas City area and the State of Kansas.


Scott AFB staff member thanked for registration assistance

Harelyn Johnson, program specialist at Park's Scott Air Force Base, Ill., Campus Center, was praised for her work in getting students enrolled for a summer session MA 105 (Intro to College Mathematics) course. According to Faye Whobrey, adjunct instructor of mathematics, the students were complimentary of Johnson's last-minute assistance. Whobrey said that the students were "very surprised to receive such motivated and helpful support. A great office staff makes my job so much easier."

Green tip of the day

Modify the temperature on your thermostat. There's no reason to keep the house perfectly heated or cooled when you are not there to appreciate it. Modifying the temperature just four degrees with a programmable thermostat will save energy and about $130 a year.
