Two Park University professors recently returned from a professional visit to China, where they lectured, attended seminars and made a joint presentation at an international conference.
Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Carol Getty, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of Communication Arts Steven Youngblood jointly presented a session, "Media and Criminal Justice," at the International Conference on Diversity in Beijing on June 30-July 3. The presentation discussed the ways media cover crime and corrections, and how media coverage shapes the criminal justice agenda. The two professors also had a chance to attend sessions at the conference on topics ranging from pedagogy to cultural adaptability.
"The conference was beneficial because of the diversity of topics presented and the backgrounds, race, and ethnicity of the presenters, all set in a rapidly changing China," said Getty.
The two professors also visited Xian, China, home to the Terracotta Warriors, thousands of life-size warriors guarding an ancient emperor's tomb. In Xian, Youngblood was the keynote speaker at the National Conference of Foreign Language professors on June 24-26. He spoke on "Participatory and Cooperative Learning."
Youngblood and Getty also addressed classes at Northwestern Polytechnic University (NPU) in Xian. Getty presented a session on American law to a group of Chinese law students. Youngblood gave lectures to two student and faculty groups on "Indecency and the FCC."
"I loved the Chinese students," said Youngblood. "They were reticent at first, but once prodded, were articulate, insightful and energetic." He also presented a session, "Public Speaking for Model UN," with NPU's award-winning Model UN team.
Both professors joined the Park University in 1997. Getty taught at two Taiwanese universities during the fall 2004 semester. Youngblood, a 2001 Fulbright scholar, has taught in Brazil, South Africa, Russia and Moldova.
