William Venable
William Venable
Venable enjoys opportunity to be in the "show" for a day

Editor's note: The following was provided by William Venable, assistant professor of marketing and management.

One of the many Park University marketing and advertising opportunities this year has been through a sponsorship of the Kansas City Royals baseball team. As a thank you, the Royals invited sponsors to send a representative to its annual "Sponsor Workout Day" event at Kauffman Stadium event where participants spent an afternoon in a mini fantasy camp on July 1. William Venable, assistant professor of
marketing and management, was the "lucky" winner of a drawing the Office of University Advancement held for Kansas City area faculty and staff.

"'Lucky' is an odd word to use as my 'friend' and Royals Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery dusted me off with a nice fastball, high and inside in my first at-bat," Venable said. "I guess Jeff just wanted to keep me honest as I did pretty good in batting practice before the game."

Venable joined other sponsors, community leaders and Royals staff and former players on a beautiful afternoon. The participants received a Royals uniform, as well as the chance to spend a few hours with Royals greats Dennis Leonard, Frank White and John Mayberry, in addition to Montgomery.

Student sends thanks to Park Student Success Center

A Park University student who is currently deployed in Iraq recently sent in a word of thanks regarding the
Park Student Success Center's timeliness in response to a question. The student said he appreciated the timely response from Allison Morris, enrollment counselor. "I actually was not expecting a response for another day or two. Just seems standard for some of the other schools that I have attended. This really puts me more at ease about taking classes with Park. I appreciate everything that you have assisted me with and I am sure that with me being in Iraq, I will have plenty more," the student said.

Photos of Service Day available to view

Randy Bailey, director of
Environmental Services, took a number of photos during the Park University Service Day on Oct. 1, and has posted the photos for everyone to view at http://picasaweb.google.com/randel.bailey/StudentProjectDay?authkey=9w8TotKtOpg#slideshow.

According to Bailey, a ton (literally) of work was completed on the Parkville Campus and the Parkville community, from window washing to major landscape projects.

Park In The News

Kathleen Vinlove, Ph.D., associate professor of
economics, was featured in a story on Kansas City's WDAF-TV (FOX-4) on Sept. 30. Vinlove was interviewed by Dave Froehlich regarding a "trickle-up" financial bailout plan that was voted down by Congress which would have provide money to struggling homeowners instead of banks. The story can be viewed at www.myfoxkc.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=7549969&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=3.2.1.

Green tip of the week

Lorie Schmitz, academic evaluator,
Fort Bliss Campus Center, El Paso, Texas, provides this "green tip."

During a recent trip to the local zoo, Schmitz heard a compelling story about how endangered Asian elephants are being threatened by the world's coffee drinking population. Some coffee companies are "slashing and burning" palm trees that provide a natural habitat for the elephants to grow their crop. However, one group, the World Wildlife Federation's Elephant Flying Squad, is helping return the elephants to their preserve. Schmitz says that because of the tactics of some coffee companies, she only buys coffee from companies that are not involved in such practices.
