Youngblood to receive journalism peace award

Steve Youngblood, associate professor of
communication arts, has been selected to receive a "Peace Award in Journalism" during the Crescent Peace Society's 12th annual Eid Celebration and Awards Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 12, in Overland Park, Kan.

Youngblood has organized peace journalism seminars in the U.S., Azerbaijan and the Republic of Georgia, and he is a two-time J. William Fulbright Scholar -- going to Moldova in 2001 and Azerbaijan in 2007. The Crescent Peace Society is a non-profit organization that serves as a focal point of action in the Kansas City area for raising awareness of different Muslim cultures.

In addition, four students in Park's
International Center for Music will perform during the event: Christian Fatu, violin; Sunnat Ibragimov, cello; Victoria Martirosyan, piano; and Gulrukh Shakirova, piano.


Stuteville, Wolpers selected for ASPA chapter posts

Rebekkah Stuteville, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the
Master of Public Affairs program, was recently appointed academic advisor to the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration board. Laurie DiPadova-Stocks, Ph.D., professor of public administration and dean of the Hauptmann School for Public Affairs, previously served as academic advisor from 2004-08, and is currently in her third year of service on the ASPA National Council.

Marion Wolpers, HSPA program manager and assistant to Kay Barnes, was recently elected to serve as president-elect of the chapter. Wolpers graduated from Park in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in management/human resources.

The chapter's board now consists of five members of the Park University community. Stuteville and Wolpers join Michael Barrett, HSPA adjunct instructor; Alexa Barton, M.P.A. '07; and Don Wise, HSPA Fellow for Nonprofit Leadership.


Bachmann art featured at in New Jersey exhibition

Donna Bachmann, professor of art, chair of the
Department of Art and Design, and director of the Campanella Gallery, is among 32 artists whose works are a part of the juried exhibition "Calculating Art: Mathematics in the Visual Field." The exhibit is being held at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery at The College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, N.J. The exhibit began Sept. 4 and continues through Wednesday, Oct. 8. McArthur to present at literature festival

Debra McArthur, director of
academic support services, will be a featured author at The Writing Conference, Inc.'s. 15th annual Literature Festival, Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Middle school and high school students and teachers will interact with McArthur during a general presentation and small group sessions discussing literature. Those attending will have already read McArthur's book Raoul Wallenberg to discuss with their peers.


Parkville Campus hosting "language lunches"

The Office of International Affairs and Education is sponsoring language lunches once again. If you already speak French, Spanish, Russian or Mandarin Chinese, or are just now learning, you're invited to come to Thompson Commons for a lunchtime hour of language conversation. This is your chance to practice a foreign language with a group of like-minded colleagues and fellow students. There is no charge for the program, and it is open to the public, so bring your friends.

The Office of Student Life will host a Community Blood Center blood drive on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the McCoy Meetin' House on the Parkville Campus. Counseling Center offering depression screenings

The Park University Counseling Center will hosi a number of screenings as a part of National Depression Screening Day on Friday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on the first floor of Thompson Commons on the Parkville Campus. The event will include screenings for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Counseling Center is conducting this outreach to make its free services known to the University community, as well as to screen individuals who might benefit from counseling and/or medical treatment -- helping improve their relationships and academic/work performance.

Green tip of the week — Bookstore offering "green" flash drives

The
Park University Bookstore is currently selling "green" flash drives. The Tribeca Greengrive 2GB USB flash drive is $24.99 and helps save the environment while you save files. The drives are packaged in 100 percent recycled material and are manufactured to comply with strict environmental standards for electronics. In addition, a portion of the proceeds for every Greendrive sold will be donated to "I'm Awake" to help meet its goal of planting 100 million trees by 2020.

The bookstore is also selling organic t-shirts in maroon and charcoal gray for $19.98. The front of the shirt reads "Organic Park University" in gold lettering with art of the world; the back reads "I am a Green T-shirt." For more information and additional tips to lead a "green life," visit
