Park campus centers participate in International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Park University campus centers across the nation participated in the annual "International Talk Like a Pirate Day" festivities -- an annual "holiday" on Sept. 19 that was started in 1995 by two Oregon friends.

Students, faculty and staff at Park's campus centers displayed their "Pirate pride" by dressing and talking for the occasion, and distributing Pirate "booty." View photos of the celebration from a number of Park's campus centers at
www.park.edu/studentlife/pirateday.aspx.

University community participates in "Park Night at the K"

About 265 Park University students, faculty, staff and alumni from the Kansas City area, as well as family members, participated in "Park University Night at the K" on Sept. 16. Those in attendance for the event at Kauffman Stadium watched the Kansas City Royals defeat the Seattle Mariners 6-3.

Besides it being a "T-Shirt Tuesday" night (all fans received a long-sleeved Royals t-shirt), attendees took advantage of a free tailgate event hosted by the University. In addition, Park University President Beverley Byers-Pevitts, Ph.D., along with two Park softball players, sophomores Emily Calder and Brittany Johnson, participated in the first pitch ceremonies just prior to the game.

Election memorabilia to be displayed in McAfee Memorial Library

During the 2000 presidential campaign, Park University Archivist Carolyn Elwess decided to display her collection of political memorabilia to encourage students to become involved in the election. To augment her supply of buttons, clothing, posters, bumper stickers and other items, she invited faculty and staff who had political items to loan them for the display.

The exhibit, located in the McAfee Memorial Library, is currently under construction and should be ready for viewing in the first week of October. Elwess plans to keep adding to the display until it comes down at the end of November. Any faculty or staff member who wishes to loan items for the display are welcome to do so -- the bigger the display, the better! Contact Elwess at
carolyn.elwess@park.edu or (816) 584-6891 for more information.

Elwess provided has provided a story about past displays she and other Park faculty and staff have contributed to. Go to

Shirts on sale as Park bookstore partners with "Rock the Vote"

Today's college student is increasingly savvy when it comes to politics. And like preceding generations, they have opinions and want them heard in elections. So, the Park University Bookstore and "Rock the Vote" have partnered to help boost voting by young people.

Until November, t-shirts bearing the "Rock the Vote" logo are discounted 25 percent (normal price is $19.98) at the bookstore on the Parkville Campus or Online at
www.park.bncollege.com. Two dollars of each sale will go to "Rock the Vote" to support its programs mobilizing and engaging young people to register and vote.

Park University faculty and staff are reminded that you receive a 10 percent discount on clothing and gift items purchased in the bookstore (this discount does not apply to items already on sale, such as the "Rock the Vote" shirts). For more information, call (816) 584-6747 or e-mail

Park In The News

• A photographer from KSHB-TV (NBC affiliate Channel 41 in Kansas City) shot video of Parkville Campus students, faculty and staff participating in International Talk Like A Pirate Day for a "kicker" story at the end of the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts on Sept. 19.

Scott Klann, director of development,
Office of University Advancement, and Jacqueline Clark, M.P.A. '00, director of communications and public affairs at Ash Grove Cement, were both featured in the "Career Ladder" section of The Kansas City Star on Sept. 24..

Green tip of the week

The environmental impact of an item of clothing lasts long after the fibers have been harvested, woven, dyed and shipped. So without making a single new purchase, you can begin to green your fashion by reducing the energy used to clean and maintain your current wardrobe. First step? Rethink your laundry. Heating water accounts for 90 percent of the energy used to wash a typical load. Yet with the exception of bed linens and grease-stained fabrics, most items don't need to be washed in simmering hot temperatures -- and too-hot water can reduce their longevity. To cut back on energy use, consider choosing clothes labeled for washing in cold water, turning your water heater down to 120 degrees and using the cold setting whenever possible. At the very least, you can cut energy use in half by simply switching the temperature setting from hot to warm.
