Scott Campus Center commencement includes trio of married couples

With students, faculty and staff around the world at 43 campus centers and Online, Park University can be considered a big global family. But at the recent commencement ceremony for graduates at Park's
Scott Air Force Base Campus Center in Belleville, Ill., it really was a family affair.

Of the 76 bachelor degrees awarded at the commencement on June 20, six went to a trio of married couples who received their degrees at the same time. Curt and Sherry Schmittling, Michelle and Richard Seider, and Crystal and Thomas Stone all earned Bachelor of Science degrees. Crystal Stone's degree was in social psychology; the other five in management. In addition, Michelle Seider was named the Gail Livingstone Outstanding Graduate, an award named in honor of Scott AFB Campus Center's first administrator.

School of Business and Management, provided the keynote address at the historic ceremony, which marked the 35th anniversary of the Scott AFB Campus Center.

YCM student to be featured in NPR concert

Alan Shi, a pianist who studies under Marina Sultanova, adjunct instructor of piano, in Park University's
Youth Conservatory of Music, will be one of four featured performers when Kansas Public Radio presents "From the Top," at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at the Lied Center on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence. Park University has partnered with KPR as the title sponsor of "From the Top."

Shi, 14, and a resident of Lawrence, has competed in the Music Teachers National Association's Baldwin Junior Piano Competition, earning second place for the state of Missouri, and in 2006 he attended the International Institute for Young Musicians.

"From the Top" is National Public Radio's hit showcase for America's best young classical musicians and is hosted by acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O'Riley. This special all-piano event will feature inspiring performances by O'Riley and young pianists who have studied at the IIYM, and will highlight the musicians' lives as regular teens through interviews and sketches.

McCormack elected to Council on Philanthropy board

Laurie McCormack, vice president for University Advancement, was recently elected to a three-year term on the board of directors for the Council on Philanthropy, a Kansas City area organization that exists to strengthen the people and organizations working in and with the nonprofit sector by educating, informing and being a catalyst for collaboration.

Hartle makes panel presentation at FEMA conference

Jeffery A. Hartle, visiting assistant professor of public affairs and
Master of Public Affairs program disaster/emergency management area coordinator, was a panelist at the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Emergency Management Institute, June 2-5 in Emmitsburg, Md.

The panel discussed the National Incident Management System with Hartle's presentation addressing the problems rural fire departments have encountered while trying to comply with the training requirements imposed by the federal government.

Hartle serves as the division chief of training for the Johnson County, Mo., Fire Protection District and trains firefighters to use NIMS. He has more than 30 years of experience as a volunteer firefighter, and has belonged to fire departments in several states. Hartle is a certified fire protection specialist and a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers.


Enjoy fireworks show from Parkville Campus

Faculty and staff are invited to bring their family to the Parkville Campus to observe the 4th of July "over the river" fireworks show in Parkville, Mo., scheduled to begin at 9:45 p.m.

The upper lot behind Mackay Hall will be reserved for faculty and staff to park. For those of you who wish to enjoy the fireworks from Observatory Hill, the path will be open and restricted to Park University faculty, staff, students and their families. Please remember that Observatory Hill is accessible only by the short walking path located above the upper parking lot. Security will be posted at the bottom of Mackay Hill and admitting only Park employees with University ID to park in the upper parking lot.


Faculty, staff to receive Park University "viewbook"

All Kansas City area faculty and staff will receive a copy of the new Park University "viewbook" the week of July 1. This comprehensive printed piece represents Park's "One University. Your World." campaign. Parkville Daytime, Downtown Kansas City, Independence; Graduate; Online and School for Extended Learning are all represented. Additional copies will be available for appropriate distribution.
