Summer project scheduled for McAfee Memorial Library

The
McAfee Memorial Library, located in the Academic Underground on the Parkville Campus, will be closed for two periods of time this summer to perform routine maintenance assessments and related renovation procedures. However, since the library is extensively used by students and faculty located at all campus centers, there will be uninterrupted accessibility of library services throughout the summer.

The library will be closed Monday, June 30, through Sunday, July 6, for a comprehensive inspection of the library's interior walls and ceilings. It will also be closed Friday, July 25, through Sunday, Aug. 10, for repairs and improvements as identified during the inspection.

Library Online services, including access to the library databases, course reserves, interlibrary borrowing and reference service by e-mail, will remain available during the entire process. Additionally, library staff will be assigned temporary office space where they can assist students and faculty on the phone and via e-mail.

Faculty who have offices in the library will have temporary work space made available in the Gibson Room (on the third floor of Thompson Commons). The Academic Affairs office will send detailed information to these individuals. The offices for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will not be affected.

The renovation will, however, affect two exhibits in the library's
Campanella Gallery. Jessica Wohl's art exhibit, which was scheduled to end on Friday, July 11, will now end on Saturday, June 28. A photography exhibit featuring the work of Masoom Khawaja, assistant professor of graphic design, originally scheduled from Monday, July 14, through Thursday, Aug. 28, will now have a two-part run -- July 14 through Thursday, July 24, and Tuesday, Aug. 12, through Saturday, Aug. 23.

Your patience and understanding during this building maintenance process, which allows the University to continue to upgrade and improve its campus buildings infrastructure, is appreciated.

Park Student Success Center ready to serve University community

The Park Student Success Center, a one-stop contact center where students, staff, faculty and other University constituents can phone, e-mail or drop-in to have questions answered, receive help and/or be directed to the appropriate resource, is now open.

Under the direction of Nancy Eastman, associate dean of enrollment services, the center will significantly help students through their academic journey at Park University. Eastman worked in collaboration with a variety of University offices and academic departments to get the PSSC rolling, which came about from an idea originating from the Enrollment Management Task Force and the Administrative Council.

In its initial phase, the PSSC will serve all undergraduate Online and extended Campus Center students -- regardless of location -- from initial recruitment, through admissions, academic advising and graduation. The Park Student Success Center is dedicated to providing excellent and speedy customer service. The PSSC gives students options regarding how they would like to receive services and offers extended office hours to meet the needs of our students' busy lives.

The PSSC is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Central time) Monday through Friday, and is located in the Commercial Underground on the Parkville Campus. For in-person help, enter the President Condit entrance to the Parkville Commercial Underground (located between McCoy Meetin' House and the Herr House parking lot), make a right turn onto Gault Street, and follow Gault to the end. The PSSC is located on the left. Or, contact the PSSC via e-mail at
pssc@park.edu; phone at (877) 505-1059 (if in the Kansas City area, call [816] 746-2526); or fax at (816) 584-2150.

Study Abroad photo contest winner announced

The contest was sponsored by Park University's Office of International Affairs and Education. In addition, the OIAE submitted Stout's winning photos for consideration in the Abroad View magazine 2008 photo contest. The photos, along with a story, could be published in an upcoming edition of the magazine.

Park Current needs your vacation submissions

In addition, staff and faculty are reminded that if your name has appeared in either the Imprint Express or The Park Current since July 2007 (or appears in upcoming issues through August 29, 2008), you will be automatically entered into a drawing to receive two tickets and a parking pass to a Kansas City Royals home baseball game during this current season. We will have multiple drawings during the season, so if you haven't submitted your professional news or announcements for the Imprint Express, or submitted personal news or announcements for The Park Current, please do so to get your name into future drawings.

Green tip of the week

Used coffee grounds make a great fertilizer for plants that thrive in acidic soil, like rhododendrons or azaleas. Sprinkle coffee grounds and eggshells around the base of plants to repel ants, snails and slugs. For more information and additional tips to lead a "green life," visit
http://sierraclub.typepad.com/greenlife.

In addition, the Park University community is encouraged to check out
www.park.edu/climatecommitment/resources.html for news and resources that you can use at your campus center in an effort to advance the University to becoming climate neutral.
