Philadelphia Phillies snag Park pitcher Josh Hake in MLB Draft

Park University junior right-handed pitcher Josh Hake was taken in the 50th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, selecting Hake with the draft's 1,498th overall pick.

Hake, who transferred to Park prior to the 2008 season from Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz., was 9-0 for the Pirates this past season. He led the nation in two statistical categories: hits per nine innings pitched (5.43) as well strikeouts per nine innings (12.33), while compiling a 2.64 earned run average. Opponents batted just .171 against Hake who allowed just 37 hits in 61-plus innings.

Park student wins Rave Wireless development competition

Rodrigo Neri, a senior majoring in information and computer science, recently won a Rave Wireless development competition for his creation of an application that allows students to buy, sell and exchange used textbooks throughout the Park University community.

Neri received a cash prize for his creation of the "myBooks Sale" application for the Rave Campus platform. He built the application with the Rave Extender toolkit, which is part of the Rave Campus mobile application suite.

Neri said the competition gave him the opportunity to create something innovative that can be used at several universities around the U.S. "The application I developed is a tool that students have been waiting for. It allows students to buy, sell and exchange books among the school's community, without having to worry about shipment or credit card transactions."

The textbook exchange application at Park University allows students to post used textbooks for sale, find a needed textbook and schedule a safe time and place to meet the buyer/seller to complete the transaction.

"Rodrigo's achievement showcases his talent, his hard work and the quality of Park's
Information and Computer Science program. We are all proud of Rodrigo," said Wen Hsin, Ph.D., associate professor of information and computer science and project adviser, on behalf of the ICS faculty.

Park University wins presidential community service award

Park University was honored recently with its selection to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is sponsored by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps and the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"Park's receipt of this national honor for the second consecutive year stands as a testament to our wonderful student leadership, our student clubs and the Office of Student Life, all of whom have made a significant commitment to community service and civic engagement," said Erik Bergrud, director of the
International Center for Civic Engagement and special assistant to the president for University projects on civic engagement.

Kudos for pair of Park Student Success Center counselors

Denna Schneider, enrollment counselor, Park Student Success Center, recently received a note of appreciation from Brian Kudlo, an Online student. Kudlo said that Schneider was one of a few individuals who "encouraged me to stay in (school)." Schneider helped Kudlo with a number of Online class issues he had, as well as provided support when he was disheartened about a prerequisite waiver request (which eventually was approved).

Allison Morris, enrollment counselor, PSSC, was also commended by an Online student for her assistance in helping the student with a degree audit and registration. "It's very hard to find good Online help these days with all the many Online self-services provided today…Your walkthrough was very helpful and saved me weeks of research/errors," the student said.

Rainy weather doesn't hamper Copley Quad project

Despite the recent wet weather conditions in the Kansas City area, the
Copley Quad student housing project continues to be on schedule for students to move in when the residence halls open on Aug. 14, according to Paul Gault, special assistant for administration and Park University's owner representative for the project.

In recent weeks, sheetrock has been hung and most rooms are ready to be painted in the west building, while the drywall installers are in the process of completing their work in the east building. In addition, electrical and plumbing rough-in is finished in the east building and the portal between the two buildings. In addition, Gyp-Crete floor underlayment, an efficient fire and sound control product has been poured on the floors throughout the west building and mason work has been completed on the south and southeast side of the building.

More information about the project, as well as a photo timeline of the construction progress can be viewed at

Green tip of the week

Getting ready to light some birthday candles, or maybe have a romantic candlelit dinner for two? Instead of reaching for a lighter, think about using cardboard matches instead. Lighters tend to be made with plastic and butane fuel, both of which are derived from petroleum, but those cardboard matches are made from recycled paper.
