Jessica Wohl featured artist in Campanella Gallery exhibit
According to Jessica Wohl, the passage of time is inevitable, and just as the camera preserves a moment in time, her paintings recount specific moments in her personal history that when linked together, provide her with a connection to her past. Through Friday, July 11, visitors to the Campanella Gallery in the McAfee Memorial Library on the Parkville Campus can view a variety of her work in the exhibit, "Silver Crowns: Portraits of a Generation."
Two major visual elements inform Wohl’s paintings -- figures and ornamentation. The figures she paints are elderly friends or family. They are physical embodiments of cultural survival and sustenance. The ornamentation in her work provides culturally-derived backdrops for the figures.
Wohl, a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, has had her work on display at various galleries across the Kansas City area, including the Kansas City Jewish Museum, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College, Sprint-Nextel and H&R Block. Preview Wohl's work at www.jessicawohl.com.

Green tip of the week
The sounds of summer don't have to include the purr of lawnmowers and the patter of sprinklers. Lose the grass -- cultivate a chemical-free lawn that drinks less and grows low. Moss is an easy alternative to grass -- it needs some moisture, but it requires little maintenance once established. Moss thrives in shady areas with compacted, acidic soil. Another option for greening your lawn is to encourage clover, a nitrogen-fixing plant, which enriches soil while providing a low-growing ground cover. Additional eco-friendly ground covers include strawberries and oregano -- edible plants for lawns that taste as good as they look.
