Park’s "One University. Your World" advertising campaign begins

Park University recently began its "One University. Your World" print, radio and television advertising campaign in the Kansas City area, and soon, those at campus centers across the country will also hear radio spots and see newspaper ads.

The advertising concept is based on the personal decision potential students have to make when deciding to either first attend or return to college. The ads depict relatable emotions and experiences experienced by many students who, as they explore educational offerings, seek learning opportunities which best fit their personal educational needs and expectations. The productions illustrate the discovery of Park University as the one university that can provide their specific sought-after outcome.

Examples of the television, print and radio ads can be viewed at

Carvalho provides info on women’s discrimination for organization

Julie Carvalho, adjunct instructor of psychology and sociology, Quantico (Va.) Marine Corp Combat Development Command Campus Center and Fort Myer Campus Center in Arlington, Va., as chair of the action committee on the status of women initiative for Psychologists for Social Responsibility, recently prepared a statement on discrimination issues affecting women worldwide. The information was for The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women -- often described as an international bill of rights for women -- adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly. The statement can be read at
www.psysr.org/about/initiatives/women/cedaw.php.

In addition, on July 12, Carvalho will present a workshop in Fairfax, Va., "Telling Your Story," for writers who wish to organize and hone their writings. She is also helping five authors complete books for publication. She recently presented shows on homelessness, fairness in social institutions and social/economic justice. Carvalho also had five items published in Washington, D.C., area newspapers, was requested to critique an article on welfare for a professional journal and advised federal agencies on proposals in human services.

Dennis attends Department of Education workshop

Kay Dennis, Ed.D., assistant professor of adult education, College for Distance Learning, traveled to Washington, D.C. for a technical assistance workshop conducted on April 8 by the Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education. The workshop, titled "Demonstration Projects to Ensure Students with Disabilities Receive a Quality Higher Education," discussed discretionary versus formula grants, narrative and budgetary elements of quality proposals, the peer review process, institutional review boards, performance measurement, and program and project evaluation.

Grant recipients are expected to develop innovative, effective and efficient teaching methods and other strategies to enhance the skills and abilities of postsecondary faculty and administrators in working with disabled students. Dennis is assisting Jo Agnew-Tally, Ed.D., dean of the School for Education, and Roxanne Gonzales, Ed.D., associate dean of the College for Distance Learning, in the preparation of a three-year project proposal for the current grant cycle. The Park proposal, if approved and funded, will offer significant benefits to all Park students while emphasizing the distinctive needs of the Wounded Warrior segment of our student body.

Student designers participate in chalk drawing event

Three Park University graphic design students got their creative juices flowing, participating in the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) Chalk Walk, April 26-27 in Kansas City, Mo.'s Concourse Park (in the historic Northeast district near the Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall). The event raised funds for inner-city youth arts programs. In the adjacent photo, students Amber Zaidi, Joshua Lane and Kevin Scharnhorst, and Masoom Khawaja, assistant professor of graphic design (from left), sit in front of their art.

Fox (co-authored by Hageman and Hoffman) presented "Deep Map Project of Northwest Missouri: An Interdisciplinary Faculty-Student GIS Collaborative;" Hageman (co-authored by Park geography student Adam Jones) presented "Using GIS to Calculate the Environmental Impact of Park University Commuters;" and Hoffman (co-authored by Fox) presented "Diffusion of the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 in Northwest Missouri."

Green tip of the week

If homebuilders install one dual-flush toilet instead of a standard low-flow toilet in every new house built in 2008, they would save 1.65 billion gallons of water a year. For more information and additional tips to lead a "green life," visit http://sierraclub.typepad.com/greenlife.
