Fisk Jubilee Singers to present concert celebrating Black History Month

Park University's Access to the Arts and the Spencer Cave Black History Lecture Series will present the Fisk Jubilee Singers on Sunday, Feb. 3, in the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel, beginning at 3 p.m. The concert is also sponsored by the International Center for Music and the Zeta Omicron Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta.

In 1999, the Singers were featured in "The American Experience," a PBS award-winning television documentary series, in the program "Singers: Sacrifice and Glory."

Park University hosts "Big Read" events

A number of "The Big Read" events in the Kansas City area, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to restore reading to the center of American culture -- encouraging reading for pleasure and enlightenment -- were held on the Park University Parkville Campus throughout November 2007.

In partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Park, Arts Midwest, the Kansas City Public Library and the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial, "The Big Read" program was developed in part by a grant from the NEA. Jane Wood, Ph.D., Park University associate professor of English and chair of the department, coordinated Park's "Big Read" efforts and was instrumental in scheduling "Big Read" events on the Parkville Campus.

This year-s "Big Read" event celebrated the life of Ernest Hemingway and his book, A Farewell to Arms. Park University hosted a panel discussion and three movie adaptations of the book. The objective of the Kansas City event was to encourage area residents to read and discuss Hemingway's landmark novel of love and war on the Italian Front during World War I. Kansas City's program coincided with the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Caporetto, a devastating Italian defeat that served as a climatic moment in the book.
