Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), this initiative seeks to address global warming by solidifying institutional commitments to reduce and ultimately become carbon neutral. "By signing the Presidents Climate Commitment, Park is embarking on a critical journey in addressing the global climate change and to make U.S. campuses more sustainable," said President Byers-Pevitts. "Park commits to developing a plan for the University to achieve climate neutrality, in terms of greenhouse gas emissions at our campus in Parkville, Mo. Park will also serve as a key leader in encouraging the surrounding community to understand and invest in the underlying science and approaches to the these ever-increasing problems." Park University joins 125 other signatories from colleges and universities across the nation who believe that higher educational institutions have the responsibility to be leaders in their communities and society by modeling ways to reduce global warming emissions and educate students in sustainability. Modeled after the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, Park also joins efforts with the city of Kansas City, Mo. Over the next two years, Park will conduct a comprehensive inventory of and develop a plan to completely eliminate its carbon emissions. The University will also provide the critical education and research necessary to help society re-stabilize the world's climate. The Commitment's flexible program of conservation, renewable energy, offsets and other creative strategies, campuses allows colleges and university to become carbon neutral in a timely and efficient manner.
