Park University's International Center for Music will open the 2013 portion of its concert season on Sunday, Feb. 10, with a concert showcasing a collage of classical and traditional Jewish music. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. in Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the University's Parkville Campus.
The concert will feature two special guests from Israel, Ilan Schul and Shmuel Sajevich. Schul, a renowned classical clarinetist, is a professor of clarinet, chamber music and orchestra studies at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Sajevich is a celebrated jazz pianist, klezmer specialist and composer.
"This performance will be a medley of classical music, with traditional Jewish music brought by immigrants from all corners of the world into Israel leading to a unique musical language," said Ben Sayevich, professor of music in the ICM. "The blend of Jewish musical traditions in Israel formed a crucial element in the melting pot of the Israeli cultural identity."
The concert will include a performance of Johannes Brahms' Clarinet Quintet, one of the most monumental chamber music works of the 19th century and widely regarded as Brahms' greatest achievement in chamber music. Performing this piece with Schul will be Park University faculty and students: Sayevich; David Radzynski, a graduate student pursuing a Master of Music degree in performance, violin; and Daniel Veis, visiting assistant professor of music, cello; as well as Chung-Hoon Peter Chun, viola, associate professor of viola at the University of Kansas.
Admission for the concert is $15 for the general public and $10 for senior citizens. Park University students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Park ID.
The next concert in the ICM's 2012-13 Concert Series will be on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel, featuring a piano recital by Dang Thai Son. He is a Vietnamese-Canadian piano virtuoso and was gold medalist at the 1980 Chopin Piano Competition.
The International Center for Music at Park University was established to foster the exchange of master teacher/performers, renowned young musicians and programs from countries across the globe. The education of emerging musicians is at the philosophical core of the Center's mission and the quality of that training crucial to great artistry.
