Stephen Bell, Ph.D., J.D., associate professor of
economics, has been awarded a grant from the Institute for Financial Markets. Bell's paper, "The Tale of Two Regulations, Dodd-Frank Act and Basel III -- Will They Prevent a Future Crisis? A Comprehensive Analysis of the Two Regulatory Frameworks," will cover the U.S. Congressional Legislation designed to prevent future financial meltdowns and its worldwide counterpart. The paper will address how likely these regulatory pieces of legislation will be in preventing a financial meltdown, like the worldwide meltdown of 2008-09.

Dr. James Pasley
Pasley authors article on Senate voting

An article written by James Pasley, Ph.D., associate professor of
political science, has been published in The Journal of International and Global Studies. The article, "Senate Voting on the Strategic Defense Initiative: The Impact of the 1991 Gulf War," examines the impact on Senate votes of the perceived success of the Patriot missile in the 1991 Gulf War. The study provides evidence through quantitative methods that greater bipartisan Senate support occurred for ballistic missile defense immediately following the 1991 Gulf War. If you know someone who has an interesting story to tell, let us know who and tell us why they should be featured. Please send this information to communication@park.edu as well.

Park staff, faculty earn kudos

Kari Estes, director, and Hayley Frome, administrative specialist, at the
Goodfellow Air Force Base (Texas) Campus Center were thanked by recent graduate for their help and encouragement. "Both Kari and Hailey have been instrumental in keeping me on track and assisting me in my accomplishments. They have taken time in advising, mentoring and guiding not only myself, but I have witnessed the care they give other students in the office. I am proud to be a Park graduate and to have had their guidance in fulfilling this goal. Even when I thought about changing majors or postponing courses due to other things going on in life, even my struggles with some of the courses, they kept encouraging me and assisting in deciding the best course of action. A big thanks to those two at Goodfellow for their efforts and their professionalism. Be assured Kari and Hailey are doing Park University and the students justice in goal accomplishment," the student said.

John Buckley,
mathematics instructor, was acknowledged by a student for his teaching. "He is by far one of the best instructors I have ever had. He really wants the students to understand the course and get the course. He relates it to everyday life to make it easier to understand. He also goes above and beyond to help his students with things such as scheduling and if we need additional help. He was truly a wonderful instructor, and I am so glad that I had him as a teacher," the student said.

S.L. Sartain, Ed.S., regional director of the
Kansas City Area Accelerated Program and the Fort Bliss (Texas) Campus Center, was thanked by a student for his advice and support. "Thank you for the information and all your help with my degree questions and the visits with me in your office. At my previous college, I rarely got a visit with a counselor so this was a new experience for me, which was a good one," the student said.

Park In The News

Chad Ackerman, technical director for academic effectiveness, was interviewed for a radio program that appeared on four stations in the Kansas City area on May 13. Ackerman, who serves as vice president of the nonprofit animal rescue organization Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption, discussed the importance of spay/neutering pets, as well as the services the organization provides.

Green tip of the day

Summer is here! To celebrate the long, hot days, rally your friends and pack a picnic. Chip bags, soda cans and paper napkins at picnics can create a huge mess. We challenge you to leave zero waste. It's easy: Bring refillable water bottles, cloth napkins, reusable or biodegradable cutlery and plates, and food in storage containers as opposed to plastic bags. After the party, check around your picnic area and pick up scraps, then bring them home to your compost pile. For more information and additional tips to lead a "green life," visit
