Park basketball teams, Student Ambassadors fighting hunger in KC area
The Park University men's and women's basketball teams want to help can hunger in the Kansas City area. Both Park teams play at Breckon Sports Center on Saturday, Nov. 21 against Kansas Wesleyan University, and rather than the regular price of admission to the Pirates' doubleheader with the Coyotes, fans can bring non-perishable food items and receive one complimentary admission to the game per donation. The women's game begins at 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at 3 p.m. No season passes or student ID cards will be accepted for admission. Fans will also be permitted to make cash donations to help the fight against hunger.
"We are in a position where we can help our fellow man, and this is a great opportunity to do just that," said Park Director of Athletics Claude English. "It's important that we realize how fortunate we are, and at the same time, it is our duty to help those in need, especially as we near the holidays."
Collection barrels will be provided by Harvesters, a Kansas City area food bank, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18, for fans who cannot make the basketball doubleheader but still wish to donate. Barrels will stay up in Breckon Sports Center until the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 24, when the Pirate men take on MidAmerica Nazarene University. Fans are welcome to make donations at the MNU game, but regular gate procedures will resume for this contest.
In addition, Park's Student Ambassadors are collecting food donations for the St. James Place food pantry and soup kitchen. Park University departments and offices can request to have a food donation box delivered to their office by sending an e-mail to Adenike Orekoya, Student Ambassadors president, at adenike.orekoya@park.edu. The boxes will be picked up on Friday, Dec. 4.

Department of History to perform "Letters from the Front"
Ninety-five years ago this Christmas, soldiers from British and German armies shared one of history's memorable occurrences. Both sides halted hostilities and walked across the "no man's land" along the battlefront and shared the unseen humanity in war and the conundrums of war. To celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Christmas Truce of 1914, students from Park University's Department of History will provide a dramatic reading/theater production of "Letters from the Front: The Christmas Truce of 1914," Thursday, Dec. 3, through Sunday, Dec. 6.
The production will be presented at 7 p.m. each night with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students and children under 18. Advance tickets can be reserved at www.park.edu/theatre/season.shtml. The production is directed and produced by Timothy Westcott, Ph.D., associate professor of history and chair of the Department of Social Sciences.

Green tip of the day
Traditional Thanksgiving meals tend to favor fall produce, so it's a great time to focus on locally grown fruits and vegetables. Consider adapting time-honored recipes to reflect your region's growing season and history. For a fun challenge, plan one dish (or the entire meal) with ingredients grown or produced within 100 miles of your home.
