President schedules town hall meetings for students, faculty, staff

With the recent approval of Park University's 2010-12 Action Plan by the Board of Trustees, Park President Michael H. Droge, Ph.D., has scheduled a series of town hall meetings for students, faculty and staff nationwide.

The student town hall meeting will be on Friday, Nov. 13, from 1-3 p.m., in the McCoy Meetin' House. The faculty town hall meetings will be on Monday, Nov. 16, from 2-3 p.m. and 3:15-4:15 p.m., while the staff town hall meetings will be held on Monday, Nov. 23, at the same times. The faculty and staff meetings will take place in the College for Distance Learning Conference Center. While all meetings will be held on the Parkville Campus, technology will be used so that students, faculty and staff at campus centers across the country can participate. In addition, these meetings will be available live (and archived for future viewing) at www.park.edu/townhall.

While the faculty and staff town hall meetings will be open forums, the student town hall meeting will provide students an opportunity to ask questions and express concerns on issues such as the University's action plan and budget, work-study availability, and Parkville Campus parking and dining services.

All Park University students, faculty and staff are encouraged to send questions in advance of their respective meetings. Send your questions to the following e-mail addresses:
• Students --

School of Business, co-authored an article that appeared in the August issue of the International Business and Economics Research Journal. Kay Barnes
Kay Barnes
Barnes presents government leadership session for Jacksonville, Fla. Chamber

Kay Barnes, distinguished professor of public leadership and founding director of Park University's
Center for Leadership, was invited to speak to more than 50 members of the Jacksonville (Fla.) Regional Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 7. The JRCC members visited Kansas City, Mo., for its annual leadership trip, which included business executives and owners, public sector directors and professionals, elected leaders, and representatives from nonprofit entities. Barnes, the former mayor of Kansas City, Mo., presented a session on government leadership.

Under her leadership, Kansas City became a community dedicated to redefining itself while restoring its proud historical roots. During her terms in office (1999-2007), Barnes oversaw initiatives that doubled the amount of tax dollars dedicated to infrastructure needs and increased the amount of funding for deferred maintenance, and she left a lasting fingerprint of excellence on the metropolitan area. Her achievements are demonstrated by the $4.5 billion investment for downtown development, including the Sprint Center, Power and Light District and the H&R Block world headquarters. Also, the number of residents living in downtown Kansas City increased with the addition of more than 7,000 new housing units.

November is National Healthy Skin Month

Once a month in the Imprint Express,
Pirate Fitness is providing a "health observance tip of the month." November is National Healthy Skin Month.

Not only can ultraviolet radiation from indoor tanning beds lead to wrinkles, it also increases the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. On an average day, more than 1 million Americans tan in tanning salons. Research shows that nearly 70 percent of indoor tanners are female, primarily 16-to-29 years old. Substantially more than 1 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States every year. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that, regardless of skin type, a broad-spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB rays), water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 should be used year-round. For more information, visit
www.aad.org/media/background/factsheets/index.html.

Green tip of the day

It may seem counterintuitive, but by turning your ceiling fan clockwise while your heater runs helps distribute the heat that gets trapped near the ceiling. That way, your room gets heated more sufficiently and you won't need to run your heater on full blast. If you don't own a fan, you can save energy by wearing warmer clothes and snuggling under blankets while at home. For more information and additional tips to lead a "green life," visit
