Student earns prestigious internship with U.S. Department of Commerce

Park University student Amy Crumbliss, a senior
Spanish major and Honors Program member, has garnered an internship with the U.S. Department of Commerce's U.S. Commerce Services office in Kansas City, Mo. Crumbliss will be a part of the International Trade Administration, an agency of the Department of Commerce that creates prosperity by strengthening the competitiveness of U.S. industry, promoting trade and investment, and ensuring fair trade and compliance with trade laws and agreements. It also assists small and medium-sized businesses to export their products overseas. The Kansas City office works with companies in northwest Missouri and eastern Kansas.

Crumbliss will be involved with offering a variety of services to businesses, including identifying international markets, finding overseas partners and assisting business to navigate trade requirements and documentation. Her specific duties will include conducting market research, preparing informational materials and writing a monthly newsletter.

"This internship has already benefited me greatly," Crumbliss said. "Not only am I able to see the real-world application of all that I learned in my
(IB 315) International Business Perspectives class, but I am learning even more about international commerce. It is exciting to get to work with companies, encouraging them to think globally and helping them expand their company internationally."

Parkville Campus to host regional "battle of the brains" competition

Park University and Park's chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery will host a regional ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest on Saturday, Oct. 24. The contest will feature 10 teams from four universities in Missouri, including three from Park, in a "battle of the brains." Each team of three students will be challenged to use their programming skills and rely on mental endurance to solve complex, real world problems under a grueling deadline. Tackling these problems is the equivalent to completing a semester's worth of computer programming in one afternoon. The team that solves the most problems correctly in the least amount of time could win one of 100 coveted spots in the world finals, Feb. 1-6, in Harbin, China. Wen Hsin, Ph.D., associate professor of
information and computer science, is Park's ACM chapter adviser.

Carol Sanders, Ph.D., and Don Williams, Ed.D., associate professors of
biology, made presentations at the Association of College and University Biology Educators annual meeting in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 9-10. Sanders and Williams hosted a roundtable discussion on "The Trials, Tribulations and Successes of Undergraduate Research -- An Evolving Program Plan." In this discussion, Sanders and Williams provided an outline of the scope and sequence of Park's Biology Research Capstone program and discussed its successes and pitfalls. The duo also presented a poster on "Stream Research in a Non-Major Environmental Biology Course." The presentation showed how the Missouri Department Natural Resources Stream Team activities are used for laboratory investigations as an attempt to engage students in real-world science.

In addition, Williams presented a teaching strategy for introductory anatomy and physiology instructors on "A Holistic Approach to the Teaching of Introductory Human Anatomy and Physiology." The session demonstrated constructive and holistic approaches to developing a fluid compartment model of body function.

Dr. Thimios Zaharopoulos
Dr. Thimios Zaharopoulos
Zaharopoulos participates as faculty reviewer for university in Cyprus

Thimios Zaharopoulos, Ph.D., interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, traveled to Cyprus during Park University's fall break to serve as an external faculty reviewer for Open University of Cyprus, Nicosia. According to Zaharopoulos, public universities in Cyprus invite internationally known experts to serve on faculty search committees for new academic positions. Zaharopoulos' travel was underwritten by the Open University of Cyprus.

Smith authors article for security publication

Jeffrey Smith, adjunct instructor of
information and computer science, recently had an article he authored published in the fall issue of The Security Journal. The article, "Management and Security Risks with Client-Server Software," identifies best practices in providing a basic roadmap for managers to ensure due diligence security in client-server software applications. According to Smith, the best practices and identification of early software vulnerabilities can contribute to successful business operations. Management holds key positional responsibility in asking questions concerning software application security and identification of software security issues early alerts key developmental personnel in pursuing an avenue for resolution. The article can be found on page 40 of the Journal.

Green tip of the day

In addition to going organic, you can make other dietary changes to help your health and please the planet. Eating less meat is a huge way to heal the earth. About 18 percent of greenhouse gases come from industrialized livestock production (and it lessens your overall caloric intake). The term "tread lightly" takes on new meaning now that there's research citing overeating and obesity as causes of global warming.
