University hosting Symposium on Public-Private Partnerships Nov. 4
Tickets remain for Park University's School of Business Symposium on Public-Private Partnerships, which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Helzberg Auditorium, located inside the Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library's Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. The symposium brings together major stakeholders in finance, public policy, economic development and real estate development for a day-long conference, with talks on how governments can benefit from private-sector financing for new infrastructure or improvements for existing, outmoded structures. Likewise, private investors are confronted with a variety of questions when deciding on the best way to structure and finance public-private partnerships that will yield acceptable return on investment.
The cost is $40 in advance and $50 at the door. A limited number of student tickets are available for $25. The fee includes Symposium materials, breakfast, lunch and complimentary parking. Attendees will also receive a certificate of professional development in public-private partnership from Park University. For complete information about the Symposium, including an event agenda and registration, visit www.park.edu/3p.

Bell co-authors article on Chinese governmental corporation ownership for journal
Stephen E. Bell, Ph.D., J.D., associate professor of economics, co-authored an article for the academic journal Corporate Ownership and Control, volume 7. The article, "Corporate Governance and Firm Valuation -- The Case of China," discusses the impact of high levels of Chinese governmental ownership in Chinese corporations. According to Bell, the Chinese government is often the majority stockholder in Chinese corporations. Minority investors tend to discount their valuation of these corporations because the Chinese government extracts benefits from the corporations to the detriment of the minority stockholder investors. The article examines the circumstances and notes that minority investors prefer larger dividend payouts to stockholders as a means of preventing the government from extracting excessive benefits from these corporations.
Brackett represents State of Missouri at national book festival
Virginia Brackett, Ph.D., Department of English and Modern Languages associate professor and chair, and director of Park's Honors Program, represented the State of Missouri at the Library of Congress National Book Festival, Sept. 26, in Washington, D.C. The festival, which Brackett attended as a member of the board of the Missouri Center for the Book, welcomed 130,000 attendees on the National Mall. It featured dozens of well-known authors and poets, including John Irving, Judy Blume and Ken Burns. Brackett is shown at right in the adjacent photo with Tom Dillingham, Ph.D., of Stephens College, and Anne-Imela M. Radice, director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

PSSC, Mountain Home AFB staff receive compliments from students
A Park University distance learning student who had sent Park Student Success Center staff a series of questions regarding his plans to graduate next fall sent in a word of thanks to the PSSC staff. The student said that the PSSC staff have "provided a tremendous service and have been extremely accommodating when it comes to assisting military members. You are all superb in what you do."
Another student, attending Park's Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, Campus Center, provided kudos for its staff. "Thank you all for your outstanding help and support throughout my degree pursuance. Your prompt responses and knowledgeable insights, outside your normal realm of duties, permitted my successful degree completion. I will fully recommend Park University and especially the Mountain Home Campus Center to anyone. This is all due to your excellent support."
Green tip of the day
One of the biggest hassles of having a pet is dealing with their poop. Not only is it inherently unpleasant, but also poses environmental hazards such as water pollution, transmitting diseases to other species, and, if left unchecked in public spaces, causing human resentment toward animals. Do your civic duty by picking up any business your pet leaves behind using a biodegradable bag or "scooperbox," or compost it. In addition, you can use an eco-friendly cat litter.
