College for Distance Learning announces campus center awards
In late September, Park University's College for Distance Learning hosted campus center directors from across the country for its annual meetings. The gathering also included an awards banquet. Visit http://news.park.edu/pub/news_001406.shtml to view a list of all the awards presented.
CHEM Club wins awards from national organization
Park University's CHEM (Chemists Have Explosive Minds) Club was recently notified that it won two awards from the National American Chemical Society for activities from the 2008-09 academic year. Park's CHEM Club received an "honorable mention" chapter award for activities noted in its Student Affiliate Annual Report. The club also received a "Green Chemistry" award based on its report of activities. The CHEM Club will be recognized in the November/December issue of inChemistry magazine and at the ACS Student Affiliates Chapter Award Ceremony during the ACS National Meeting in San Francisco. Donna Howell, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, is the club's adviser.
Students participate in Student Project Day on Parkville Campus
More than 200 students on the Parkville Campus participated in the Student Project Day in early October. This service day, which included students in all 12 LS 100 (First-Year Seminar) classes, along with LS 100 mentors, faculty and staff, was organized by Landscape Services employees, who also served as project leaders for the completed projects.
Projects completed included:
• Creation of mulched tree rings at several high visibility locations
• Cleanup and placement of wood chips on the path to Observatory Hill (behind Mackay Hall)
• Litter and leaf pickup along campus roadways
• Harvesting of zinnia seeds in multiple flower beds for recycling and to be put to use next spring
• Brush clearing along 6th Street
• Mulching and cleaning up of shrub beds near the President Mackenzie entrance to the Parkville Commercial Underground
Check out photos from the Student Project Day. In addition, Randy Bailey, director of environmental services, put together a video highlighting students working. It can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-RuCPp2OtY.

Green tip of the day
The U.S. pet-product industry rakes in $43 billion per year, only $1 billion of which goes to eco-friendly items. Do your part to pump that number up by opting for organic pet food (it may sound ritzy, but it really does help the earth) and equipment and toys made by eco-minded manufacturers. But buying greener doesn't mean you have to buy more. The best way to reduce waste is to buy less, so ask yourself whether your pet really needs the item you're considering buying.
