Steps between Copley Quad and Science Hall to be reconstructed

Thanks to the generous gifts of former trustee Robert ('38) and Mary Alice Corbett, and the Sunderland Foundation, the steps connecting the Copley Quad residential hall and the Findlay-Wakefield Science Hall have been closed for reconstruction. Construction is slated to begin at 7 a.m. each day and the area scheduled to be reopened the first week of November with a dedication ceremony featuring the Corbett's and Sunderland's. The new construction will feature six-foot wide steps with railings, improvements to the adjoining hillside, lights and a five-foot clear walkway.

Students/faculty/staff who use these steps will need to use the steps between Copley Hall and Norrington Center during the construction. The sidewalk and entrances on the west side of the Science Hall will remain open.

In addition, the handicap parking area on the north side of the Science Hall will be blocked off. A few handicap spaces will be moved to the parallel parking area along Morden Road. Those who drive along Morden Road are advised that construction crews will be in the area directing traffic to allow trucks in and out of the area. Regular commuter traffic will continue to drive one way along Morden Road.

Youth Conservatory for Music students earn high marks at competition

On Sept. 20, piano students in Park University's
Youth Conservatory for Music, a division of the International Center for Music, competed at the 2009 Missouri Music Teachers Association District III auditions in Overland Park, Kan. The students are: Arianna Richardson and Liana Storey, both second graders from Kansas City, Mo.; Ting-Ting Shi, 4th grade, Lawrence, Kan.; Caroline Dong, 5th grade, Lawrence; Jasmine Ye, 5th grade, North Kansas City, Mo.; and Danni Wang, 9th grade, Overland Park. Marina Sultanova, instructor of piano in the YCM, is their teacher.

Recycling efforts paying off on Parkville Campus

According to statistics recently released by Randy Bailey, director of
environmental services, Park University's Parkville Campus recycled 4,595 pounds of paper and 25 pounds of aluminum and plastic cans/bottles between mid-July and mid-September. Bailey said that the total was affected by a one-time recycling of old University catalogues, "but we are nevertheless happy that this much paper did not go to the landfill." Approximately 124 pounds of paper is being recycled on the Parkville Campus each day. Visit www.park.edu/recycling/ to learn more about Park's recycling and sustainability efforts and what you can do to help the University be "green."

KC Philharmonia season to open Oct. 4

The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City will open its 2009-10 season with a concert on Sunday, Oct. 4, featuring familiar pieces composed by Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Dvorak. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. in Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the Parkville Campus. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. This is conductor Andres Franco's final season at the helm of the Philharmonia. Franco has been appointed associate conductor of the Fort Worth (Texas) Symphony and principal conductor of Caminos del Inka Ensemble. The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City is a not-for-profit community orchestra sponsored in part by Park University.

Green tip of the day

When choosing materials and textiles for your home, choose those with the longest lifespan, such as microfiber, wool and organic cotton, even if they cost more. Smart greenies know that they're a better investment in the long term and the fact that they won't quickly end up in the dump means that long-lived fabrics are better for the environment.
