University partners with Coro leadership group; moves program to Downtown Kansas City Campus Center

Park University and Coro Kansas City have announced a partnership that will restructure the leadership group to include a college internship and move the program to Park's
Downtown Kansas City, Mo., Campus Center. Coro Kansas City will be led by Kay Barnes, distinguished professor for public leadership and founding director of Park's Center for Leadership. Barnes, who served as Coro Kansas City's executive director in 1983, will work closely with Don Wise, Hauptmann School for Public Affairs fellow for nonprofit leadership.

With the new partnership, the Coro program will add an academic credit component to the 10-week college internship. Students selected for Coro Kansas City will be registered in a graduate course in leadership at Park University, and may transfer elective credits to their home institutions. Students accepted should be prepared for a "demanding" internship and have an interest in public affairs. Each will be assigned an internship in each of these five sectors: business, government, labor, media and nonprofit organizations. Read more about the partnership at

University partnering with local clinic to offer flu shots

Park University, in conjunction with the
Office of Human Resource Services, is partnering with The Urgency Room to offer a flu shot clinic on Friday, Sept. 25. All Park University faculty, staff and students are encouraged to get a flu shot, which will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Millsap Foyer (just inside the main entrance to the Mabee Learning Center/Academic Underground). The cost for shots is $20, or $30 for the nasal mist. Only cash will be accepted as payment. Those interested in getting a flu shot/nasal mist need to e-mail Ashley Culp, HRS assistant director, at ashley.culp@park.edu, indicating which vaccination you are interested in.

If you are unable to get a flu vaccination at this time, The Urgency Room, located at 10015 N. Ambassador Drive, in Kansas City, Mo., will continue to give vaccinations in its office. The Urgency Room is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to noon; and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. without an appointment.

Theatre department to open season with Fuddy Meers

The Park University
Department of Theatre will open its 2009-10 season with the play, Fuddy Meers, by David Lindsay-Abaire, an American playwright who received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2007 for the play, Rabbit Hole. Park's production of Fuddy Meers will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3, and Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 8-10, at 8 p.m. in the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater on the Parkville Campus. Tickets are $8 and student tickets are free with a valid Park ID. Tickets can be reserved by calling (816) 584-6451 or at the box office beginning one hour before each performance.

Fuddy Meers is the story of a psychogenic amnesiac whose memory is erased when she goes to sleep. "Claire" awakens each morning with her husband and teenage son explaining her condition. One morning, Claire is abducted by a limping, lisping, half-blind, half-deaf man who claims her husband wants to kill her. The journey gets more complicated when a dimwitted thug with a foul-mouthed hand-puppet pops up at a window, and her driven husband and perpetually stoned son show up with a claustrophobic female cop they've kidnapped. The audience views the ensuing mayhem through the kaleidoscope of Claire's world. The play culminates in a disharmony of revelations, proving that everything is not what it appears to be.

Students in the play include:
theatre performance majors Jason Bauer, senior, "Richard"; Sarah Engels, senior, "Heidi"; Maysa Sapargeldiyeva, senior, "Gertie"; Andrew Cudzilo, junior, "Limping Man"; Tyler McCall, freshman, "Kenny"; English writing major Matthew Shaw, freshman, "Millet"; and visiting student Lora Hawkins, "Claire."

Kudos sent to ITS, Scott AFB employees

Shaun Ferguson, Information Technology Services system administrator and analyst, received some words of appreciation from students across the country for his efforts on the Google Apps implementation. In just four months, Ferguson, in coordination with other ITS staff, migrated more than 80,000 student, faculty and alumni accounts to Google Apps, after PirateMail reached the end of its life. "This looks a whole lot better and current with technology. My sincere thanks and keep up the good work in maintaining the information systems up-to-date and relevant," one student said. "Thank you! This has worked out great for me and I found the tutorials very helpful," said another.

A veteran and student at the
Scott Air Force Base, Ill., Campus Center praised the work of Jessica Reilly, assistant director. "Jessica has been a huge help through the process of getting registered for both classes and my VA benefits. Her professional nature and willingness to help is very appreciated. Thanks for doing a great job!"

Parkville Campus area traffic advisory

The Missouri Department of Transportation will switch traffic for a portion of Route 45 (also known as Tom Watson Parkway) near Parkville, Mo., to continue work on a roundabout at the intersection of Route K (also known as NW Union Chapel Road/NW Hampton Road). Route 45 is scheduled to be detoured two-tenths of a mile, weather permitting, through Monday, Oct. 12. Traffic on north and southbound Route K will encounter flagging operations, delaying traffic up to 15 minutes.

Green tip of the day

When changing out cabinets or countertops during a remodel, make sure that what was previously there is carefully disassembled. That way, it can be reused elsewhere in your home (perhaps the laundry room) or donated to an organization that could reuse it. This will prevent ripped-out items from ending up in the landfill. When replacing windows, go double-paned, and if you're replacing the roof, consider solar panels. For more information and additional tips to lead a "green life," visit
