Glauner has Park-centric philosophical book published
Jeff Glauner, Ph.D., professor emeritus of English, recently had a book published that included many items that were inspired by the environment at Park University. The True Book of Sam Clear Water: Wisdom from Walden-San is a philosophical almanac comprising vignettes, poems, drama, fictional stories and dialogues. History department faculty, students attend National Archives open house

Park University faculty and students had the opportunity to attend the invitation-only open house for the dedication of the new Central Plains Branch of the National Archives and Records Administration in Kansas City, Mo., on May 21. Timothy Westcott, Ph.D., associate professor of history and chair of the Department of Social Sciences, was joined by history majors Daniel Brandt, senior, and juniors James Hodges and Brian Moon. In addition, two recent Park graduates, Krista Irick (Asian culture and linguistics) and Wendi Reinwald (history) attended. They were hosted by Steve Spence, '03, an archives technician at the NARA Central Plains Branch. In recent years, the Central Plains Branch has hosted two Park students from the History program as interns and has hired two Park graduates.

Zaharopoulos presents paper at pop culture conference
Thimios Zaharopoulos, Ph.D., dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and interim associate vice president for academic affairs, presented a paper at the 2009 National Popular Culture Association Conference, April 7-10, in New Orleans. Zaharopoulos' paper, "Immigration, Gender Equity, Cultural Industries and the Development of Soccer in the United States," described the major social events that shaped the development of soccer in the country since the 1800s. Particularly, it focused on the influence of immigration, Title IX and the development of women's sports, as well as the integral role of the music, film and television industries in the sports evolution in the U.S. The paper also analyzed the role of important players of the sport, from Pelé to David Beckham.

Eskey presents paper for Online conference
Michael T. Eskey, Ph.D., associate professor of criminal justice and Online instructor evaluator, presented a paper at the 2009 eCampus Colloquium, May 6-8. The Online conference, focusing on "Tech Savvy Teaching for Global Online Students," was sponsored by Troy University. Eskey's paper, "Finding a Best Fit for Online Instructor Evaluation," featured differences in best practices for traditional versus Online classroom, traits of successful Online instructors and the creation and administration of effective instructor training programs.
New exhibit to open in Campanella Gallery
Park University's Campanella Gallery, located in the McAfee Memorial Library on the Parkville Campus, will host an exhibit of art by Margaret Shelby, beginning Monday, June 1. The exhibit, "Drift: Dog and Horse -- Image, Form and Motion," will continue through Friday, July 10.
According the Shelby, the horses in her work are responding to their own workload, though what they bear is often ambiguous. Campanella Gallery Director Donna Bachmann, professor of art and chair of the Department of Art and Design, said she was initially drawn to Shelby's work because of her "beautiful draftsmanship of the horses and the sense of movement they conveyed, as well as her knowledge of anatomy."
Ethnic Voices Poetry Series to hold encore presentation
The 2008-09 season of Park University's Ethnic Voices Poetry Series has been extended as an additional poet has been slated to make an appearance. Craig Santos Perez, a native Chamoru from the Pacific U.S. territory of Guam, will read from a selection of his poetry as a part of the EVPS on Wednesday, June 17. The reading will take place at the Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., beginning at 6:30 p.m. A reception will kick off the event at 6 p.m. and a book signing will take place at the conclusion. Park University publications now available as "e-magazines"
Park University recently produced some University publications in an "e-magazine" format that is easier to navigate than the conventional PDF format. This new format will also save the University the cost to print these publications. The available publications are the Park University Viewbook, the Park University 2009-10 Undergraduate Catalog and the Spring 2009 issue of the Park University Magazine. Additional University publications will be made available in the e-magazine format in the future.
Park Current reminder: Send us your Mother’s Day and Father’s Day photos
The May/June issue of The Park Current will be coming soon and wants to honor all Park University mothers and fathers. We’re looking for photos of Park faculty and staff with their children, and/or photos of you with your mom and dad. Please be sure to identify everyone in the photo, as well as include any additional information about the photo and the individuals in the photo. Green tip of the day
After you've purged your closets (recycling everything, of course) and dusted off your shelves, set the stage for a cleaner, greener year. Use spring cleaning as an excuse to reorganize your recycling bins for maximum efficiency or make sure a hibernating bike is tuned up and ready to ride. Clear out pantry space so that you'll have room to store staples bought in bulk. Get out your calendar and designate a regular schedule for repair projects.
