Park University's annual Honors Convocation on April 22 acknowledged the outstanding scholastic efforts of Park University students, faculty and staff during the 2008-09 school year. In addition to departmental academic honors, the University also honored a handful of exceptional students and faculty with a variety of special awards.

The most prestigious honor bestowed on any student at Park University -- the Outstanding Parkite Award -- is given to one senior female and one senior male student on the Parkville Campus who best exemplify the ideals of the University in their character, conduct, scholarship and student activity participation. The awards are endowed by Dr. Elliot F. Parker in memory of his parents, Albert George and Jessie Bewley Parker. This year's Outstanding Parkite Award went to Elvin Hatamzade and Jessica Moody.

Hatamzade, a legal studies major from Baku, Azerbaijan, is an honors student with a 4.05 cumulative grade point average. In addition to his academic accomplishments, he has served in leadership roles in several organizations, including as a senator in the
Park Student Government Association, vice president for Park's People to People International chapter and president of Park's World Student Union. He has also been involved in Model United Nations, Interfaith Dialogue, Pirate Club, International Speakers Club and Cultural Sharing, as well as many service projects. His awards include: Dean's Honor Roll, departmental honors in legal studies in 2009, and legal studies and philosophy in 2008; the Communication Arts Oratorical Award in 2007; Dr. Doris Howell Leadership Awards in 2006 and 2007; and the Leadership Award at the National Model United Nations Conference in 2008.

One nominator wrote of Hatamzade: "Over the past few years, he has demonstrated to me time and time again that he is an exceptional communicator and gifted student. In addition to these amazing gifts and his busy agenda, he is a humble, warm and approachable person."

Moody, from Kansas City, Mo., studies in the
Master of Education in Educational Leadership program. She has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of Pi Lambda Theta, an invited honorary society for education students who have a high GPA, outstanding research skills and an excellent service record. This year, Moody served as president of Park's chapter of the American Association of University Women. She has also been the president of Park's Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development student chapter. Through her work in these groups, she has developed many service, social and educational events, including a service trip to New Orleans and a school supply drive for tornado victims in Greensburg, Kansas. She was recognized as Student Club Officer of the Month in September 2008, and she represented Park University at the 2008 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders in Washington, D.C.

As one nominator stated, "Jessica has an unwavering commitment to service and exemplifies Park's mission and values selflessly and genuinely."

B. Jean Mandernach, Ph.D., associate professor of
psychology and research associate in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award. According to a colleague, Mandernach leads the way in professional achievement, in teaching and specifically, teaching using the Online mode of delivery. A responsive, dedicated member of the Department of Psychology and Sociology, the colleague said that Mandernach accomplishes all that she does despite being physically located away from the Parkville Campus and her colleagues. "Jean has a restless intellect that she applies at all levels of her professional activity, and Park University is fortunate to have her on its faculty."

Manuchair Ebadi, '60, Ph.D., established this award in honor of Delta W. Gier, Ph.D., former chair of the
Department of Chemistry who served Park from 1948 to 1990. The award pays tribute to a faculty member who shows evidence of commitment to high standards of excellence in the area of scholarship: teaching, discovery, integration and/or service. The recipient also shows effective and innovative connections between teaching and research, especially by undergraduate student involvement and participation.

The Park Piano Trio -- Martin Storey, left,Stanislav Ioudenitch and Ben Sayevich, with Dr. Beverley Byers-Pevitts
Honored with the Distinguished Humanities Faculty Award was the Park Piano Trio -- pianist Stanislav Ioudenitch, associate professor of music and the artistic director of the
International Center for Music and the Youth Conservatory of Music; violinist Ben Sayevich, professor of music; and cellist Martin Storey, assistant professor of music. The Park Piano Trio is an ensemble of distinction whose professional activities are fully integrated into its members' roles as colleagues and as performer-teachers. Each of these individuals is committed to achieving the highest level of excellence while their collegial ensemble work serves as a model of collaboration and excellence for their students and the public alike. The group was formed in 2006 under the auspices of Park's International Center for Music and serves as its trio-in-residence. Later this year, the group will release its first recording, featuring the music of Brahms and Mendelssohn.

Ebadi also established this award, in August 2007, to celebrate the work, life and thoughts of Woodbridge O. Johnson, Ph.D., professor emeritus and chair of religion and Biblical literature at Park from 1946 to 1966. The award is presented to a University faculty member who exhibits extraordinary accomplishments in research or creative scholarship through teaching, discovery, scholarly or creative work, and service.

Three additional Presidential Awards were also presented:

• Students Adrienne Barr and Javier Centonzio received the Louisa Davidson Hinde/Carolyn Hinde Zarkaryan Memorial Award. This award is given to the individuals who best represent the spirit of Park University by promoting in others that quality of excellence that has always been associated with a Park University education.

Barr, currently living in Stafford, Va., but originally from Gladstone, Mo., graduated in December 2008 with a bachelor's degree in
English/language and literature. Last year, she accepted a challenging summer internship at the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., and after working there a short time, was offered full-time position while finishing her degree from a distance. During her time at Park, she served as president of both the Criminal Justice Club and the English Club, and facilitated many service and social activities for those organizations and the campus community.

Centonzio, of Kansas City, Mo., is a senior majoring in political science and was the
Park Student Government Association president during 2008-09. He will attend the Stetson University College of Law in Florida later this year. Before coming to the Parkville Campus, Centonzio was a combat veteran of the U.S Marine Corps and with the Kansas National Guard. He is the past president of Park's Political Science Club and he has taken steps to get a new student group organized at Park -- Student Veterans of America. In April, the American Council on Education invited him to speak at the Washington (D.C.) Higher Education Secretariat on the value that veterans bring to the University community.
