Park's Xerox Global Business Lecture Series features Fareed Zakaria
Park University hosted Fareed Zakaria, CNN host and editor of Newsweek International, on March 31 at Kansas City's Folly Theater. Zakaria's appearance was a part of Park's Xerox Global Business Lecture Series. Approximately 1,100 attended this sold out event. Zakaria, an expert in international affairs, spoke on The Post-American World, which is the title of his book, published in May 2008. This national best-seller is about "the rise of the rest" -- the growth in Brazil, China, India and many other countries -- and what it means for the future. The event was also broadcast live via Park's web site to allow students, faculty and staff at campus centers across the country and Online to share in Zakaria's message.
International Center for Music students win scholarships
Students in Park's International Center for Music came away with $6,700 in scholarships during a pair of scholarship auditions in the Kansas City area on March 7.

Park faculty praised for contributions, achievements at recognition event

Park Online courses certified by Quality Matters
Quality Matters, a faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of Online courses and Online components, certified six Park University Online courses. This makes 34 Park Online courses that have been certified since 2007. School of Business selects first executive-in-residence
Park's School of Business appointed Robert D. Mayer as its inaugural executive-in-residence for the 2009-10 academic year. The Executive-In-Residence Program is designed to attract a senior executive who brings energy, vitality and perspective by working with students and faculty to inject "real world" experience into the classroom.

Bachmann wins mixed-media art award
Donna Bachmann, professor of art, chair of the Department of Art and Design, and director of Park's Campanella Gallery, had one of her assemblages chosen as the award-winner for mixed-media in the "Cultures Without Borders" exhibit that is appearing through April 25 at Pi Gallery in Kansas City, Mo.
Accounting students help prepare taxes for Kansas City residents
Park University accounting students provided free tax preparation assistance to qualified low-income residents in the Kansas City area as part of a hands-on tax practicum in March. The students also extended help to Park's international students.

Hauptmann lecture features its first international speaker
Pan Suk Kim, Ph.D., an international expert and leader in public administration, was the featured speaker at Park's 17th annual Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series on March 19. Kim, the first international speaker in the history of the lecture, spoke on "Building Trust in Government by Improving Governance."

Student honored for behind-the-scenes theater work
Chrystal Coltharp, a sophomore theater design major, was honored by The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Coltharp received a special commendation for her work as the stage manager on the Park University September 2008 production of "subUrbia."

Alumni Weekend '09 scheduled for June 25-28 on Parkville Campus
Save the date! Park University's Alumni Weekend '09 will be held Thursday, June 25, through Sunday, June 28, on the Parkville Campus. The event will include class reunions, golf, activities, picnics and more, and there will be special events for first-time visitors to the Parkville Campus. Office of Alumni Relations hosting Montana dinosaur dig trip
Reserve your spot for Park University's Montana Dinosaur Dig, July 7-11, 2009, in the Hell Creek Formation of eastern Montana. The dig will be led by two Park faculty members: Scott Hageman, associate professor of geology, and Brian Hoffman, Ph.D., professor of biology and mathematics. Graduates of Park University are reminded that they automatically become members of the University's Alumni Association. Members receive the Park University Magazine, notification of events, including the annual Alumni Weekend and Harvest Fest, invitations to regional receptions/reunions, access to the Online Alumni Directory and representation on the Alumni Council. Alumni are encouraged to participate in the many programs and committees available to Alumni Association members. Park hosting NAIA national volleyball tournament this week
Park University's men's volleyball team will defend its 2008 national championship title during the NAIA Men's Volleyball National Invitational Tournament, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 16-18, in Breckon Sports Center on the Parkville Campus. The Pirates open pool play against Lindenwood (Mo.) at 10 a.m. on Thursday, followed by a match on Friday at 10 a.m. against Hope International (Calif.). Should the Pirates place in the top two of their pool, Park will advance to the semifinal round on Friday. The semifinal winners will meet on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the championship. Meriweather selected to NAIA All-America team; basketball players earn honors
Jon Meriweather, senior forward, was named to the 2008-09 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball All-America Second Team. Meriweather led the Pirates in scoring (20.9 points per game), rebounding (10.3 rebounds per game) and blocks (2.7 per game), ranking among the top nine in all three categories nationally in NAIA Division I.

Meriweather was also named to the AII All-Independent first team, while teammates Deron Cherry II, Herschel Rodgers and Michael Zimmerman were selected to the second team. On the women's side, Park's Brianne Edwards was an AII All-Independent first team selection and Meghan Cummings was named to the second team.

Men's basketball players named NAIA Scholar-Athletes
Men's basketball players Deron Cherry II and Michael Zimmerman were named 2008-09 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Zimmerman will graduate in May with a degree in legal studies after earning a 3.96 grade point average in his five previous semesters at Park. Cherry, a business administration/management major, has a 3.88 cumulative GPA. The duo, along with teammates Philip Garnett, Eduardo Quintero, Milan Susnjar and Jeremy Voorhees were also named to the Association of Independent Institution's All-Academic team.
