Park University People To People Chapter Volunteers At Operation Iraqi Children WarehouseBy Simona Cibotaru, graduate assistant, and Fabio Garcia, international programs coordinator, Office of International Affairs and Education / Brad Biles - October 20, 2008 - 7:50 amEmail this article | Printer friendly page | Media Inquiries | Share on Facebook | Share on Twitter
The volunteers, led by Mary Eisenhower, People to People International president and chief executive officer (and granddaughter of U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower), put together 800 boxes, each containing eight school kits, during just two hours of work. Park's PTPI chapter members are planning a second visit to the Operation Iraqi Children warehouse to put together more school kits for Iraqi children. Students anticipate the event becoming a Park University tradition with once a month visits to the warehouse. Sinise and Hillenbrand created OIC to give concerned Americans a way to reach out to war-stricken Iraqi children and support American troops in their efforts. Since its inception, OIC has delivered more than 200,000 school supply kits to Iraq, along with more than 500,000 toys and thousands of Arabic-language books, shoes, blankets, backpacks and sports equipment, all of which have been distributed to Iraqi children by American troops. The Park University People to People International chapter focuses on multicultural understanding and awareness of values of different cultures through connections between local and international student populations, businesses, community and organizations. Park's PTPI chapter meets regularly and provides a number of programs to Park University and the Parkville Campus.
